Young tackled mental illness extremely well in this novel, and that is definitely something that I have not seen or read before. I was so pleasantly surprised by this book, I cannot wait to pick up the sequel! I had heard a lot about the book, and felt like it was going to be extremely intense, and I needed to be in the right head space to read it. To be honest, even though I had heard fantastic reviews about this book, I had been putting off reading it for months since I purchased it. The protagonist, Sloane, is doing everything she can to keep herself out of The program while her world is crumbling around her, and she eventually finds herself in the program, begging for a way to get out and to stop the government for good. People who show signs or symptoms of being suicidal or having depression are placed in an institution called The Program, where they are said to be cured of the so-called disease by becoming a blank slate. Recently I read The Program by Suzanne Young, and I thought it was incredible! The novel itself is about a dystopian society where suicide is an epidemic, and it believed to be a “disease”.
